The Drassanes Reials de Barcelona ( Spanish: Real Atarazanas de Barcelona) are the medieval shipyards of Barcelona.

History

The Drassanas were not the first shipyard of the city, an old shipyard to have stood on the city wall at Regomirtor. During the reign of Peter III. was started 1280-1300, with the construction of Drassanes. They consisted of a walled square, each with a tower at the corners. Two of these towers still stand today. Alfonso IV gave an order to cover over the yard. However, the works continued lack of money and thunderstorms until the reign of Peter IV out. A proposal of the king, to relocate the shipyard, was not implemented. The City Council - the Consell de Cent - objected and proposed instead and financial support, to complete the roof.

Under John I the Drassanes were greatly expanded to meet the needs of the Catalan merchants and the Crown of Aragon justice. The courtyard was roofed and built a two-story, crowned with battlements stage porch with a small yard. The Gothic building from 1381 has eight halls. During renovations that were completed in early 2013, came excavations days, provide the relevant data about the history of the building. On one hand, they found the remains of a Roman necropolis and on the other hand, it was found that, although the building dates back to the thirteenth century, much of what is not medieval preserved until today, but dates from the sixteenth century, although the original Gothic style was retained.

End of the 15th century, there were already 16 halls. 1571 was built here, the Real, the flagship of Don Juan de Austrias in the Battle of Lepanto.

From 1578 the Generalitat de Catalunya took over the administration in 1618 and built three new warehouses, differed from the dimensions of the previous one. Between 1641 and 1644 the Drassanes were fixed because of the Reapers. In the 18th century the central hall was enlarged to take into account the new ship types. 1714-1935 served as the Drassanes artillery barracks. On 5 May 1976, the Drassanas were declared a national monument. Since 18 January 1941 she host the Museu Maritim de Barcelona.
