Barghest

The Barghest (also called " Bargtjest ", " Bo - guest" or " Bargest " ) is a mythical black dog, the one in the north of England, especially in Yorkshire, believes.

Characteristics and origin

The Barghest has huge fangs and claws and he is said to inhabit the remote canyon " Troller 's Gill ." There is a story, which he occasionally enters the city of York and then waylay lonely traveler on the narrow streets of the city. He is ranked among the obviously malignant copies of the "Black Dog ".

Its name is of uncertain origin. One explanation is that the word " ghost" (spirit) in the north of England as "guest" pronounced; the whole name should therefore be " burh - Ghest " (City Spirit). Another turn, examines the roots in the German " mountain spirit " also spoken by the " Bärgeist ", in reference to his alleged appearance in the shape of a bear at certain times. A final assumption sees the origin of the name of " beer - spirit ", the " spirit of the bier " ( beer = bier ) is derived.

According to some sources the Barghest is no real " Black Dog ". He should not be a spirit, but rather a goblin, who can transform into a dog shape, among other things.
