Barlavento Creoles

Sampadjudu (also: Sampadjudo ) refers to language and inhabitants of the Cape Verde islands outside of Santiago, more precisely: Santo Antão, São Vicente, São Nicolau, Sal, Boa Vista, Fogo and Brava. The dialect of Maio is the Badiu Santiago so similar that it is usually not referred to as Sampadjudo. Sampadjudu is a variant of Cape Verdean Creole.

The origin of the word two explanations are given:

  • São para ajudar (port: they came to help )
  • Ajuda Sampaio (Portuguese proper name )

Both versions indicate that in regional famines people from other islands of Santiago in so-called auxiliary programs ( Ajuda ) were employed in road construction. Sampaio Ajuda was the surname one of the administrators of these programs.
