Baron Ashburton

Baron Ashburton, of Ashburton in the County of Devon, is a British hereditary title of nobility, which was created twice, first in the Peerage of Great Britain and now in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It is worn by members of the Baring family.

Ceremonies

The title was first created in 1782 for the Whig politician, Sir John Dunning. With the death of his son in 1823, went out of the title.

1835, the title for the financier and Tory politician Alexander Baring was renewed. He was a cousin of the last carrier of the title and was a member of the famous banking family Baring. After the death of his father, he had taken over the management of the bank, he was also for many years been a member of the House of Commons.

Other titles of the family

The Baring family, who lives a branch in Germany, came as bankers ( Barings Bank) to wealth. Various members of the family were elevated to the peerage. Thus, the members of one branch of the family are often entitled to inherit also in terms of another title.

This applies to the Barons Ashburton, but only for the dignity of Baronet of Larkbeer, now a subordinate title of Baron Northbrook, which was awarded to the father of the first Baron.

Other branches of the family bear the title of Baron Revelstoke, Earl of Cromer and Baron Howick of Glendale.
