Robert de Ros, 1st Baron de Ros was a descendant of Piers de Ros, his great-grandfather, the steward Dapifer the French Count of Aumale was and who died about the year 1130. Robert de Ros was companion of Simon de Montfort 1263/64 and from that convened on December 24, 1264 on behalf of the king by a writ of summons to Parliament Montfort. Therefore counted as 1st Baron de Ros until Robert's son William de Ros, of a writ of summons received by the king in 1299. The question of whether the Barony de Ros since 1264 consisting recognized, remained long in suspense. In the period following the title holder petitioned repeatedly to achieve recognition Roberts as 1st Baron de Ros. It was first given as a first step of the barony in 1616 the priority over all other baronies of the Kingdom until finally 1806 the House of Lords, the barony of de Ros recognized as founded in 1264. Since that time, it is legally recognized that the Barony de Ros is the oldest in England and allowed to use the title Premier barony of England.
