Baron Herbert of Chirbury

Baron Herbert of Chirbury, of Chirbury in the County of Shrewsbury is a hereditary British title of nobility which is supported now as subordinate title of Earl of Powis each. The title was awarded a total of five times. The name of the barony refers to the village Chirbury ( Cherbury ) in Shropshire on the border with Wales.

Ceremonies

The first ceremony took place in 1629 in the Peerage of England in the Anglo-Welsh soldier and diplomat Edward Herbert, who came from the famous Herbert family. He became famous especially as the philosopher of religion. The barony became extinct in 1691, as the fourth Baron, died without a male heir ..

1694, three years later, was the barony of Herbert Chirbury for Henry Herbert, a cousin of the last Baron of the previous award, created again in the Peerage of England. This was for many years a deputy in the House of Commons. With the death of his son and successor in 1738 the title became extinct again.

1743 the barony, well, awarded in the Peerage of Great Britain for the third time, this time to a different Henry Herbert, who was both a distant cousin of the former barons as well as a descendant of the second honoree Richard Herbert. This was also 1749, also appointed in the Peerage of Great Britain, Baron Herbert of Chirbury and of Ludlow. This title was provided with a special succession plan in favor of a more distant relatives. He has also held various political offices over several decades. Both titles extinct in 1801 with the death of the second Baron.

1804, the title was finally, well, awarded for the fifth time in the Peerage of the United Kingdom, now Edward Clive. This was 1798-1803 Governor of Madras. His descendants use the title to this day.

More titles

For the first Baron was the first award already in 1624 the title Baron Herbert of Castle Iceland, has been created in the County of Kerry, in the Peerage of Ireland. Named this barony was after the small Irish town of Castle Iceland in County Kerry. Through his ( distantly related ) wife Mary Herbert of St. Julians had Edward Herbert lands in Ireland. The title became extinct with the Barony of Herbert Chirbury 1691st

The first Baron of the third award was raised in 1748 to the Earl of Powis, and led the barony then as a subsidiary title.

Also, the first Baron of the fifth award was raised to the Earl of Powis. The transfer of the earldom in 1804 the barony was re- subordinated to the title of the Earls. The Baron had already in 1774 by his father, Robert Clive, the dignity of a Baron Clive of Plassey in the County of Clare, inherited, which belongs to the Peerage of Ireland. As this Irish title was not connected to an automatic seat in the House of Lords, given the title Baron Clive in 1794, of Walcot in the County of Shropshire, loaned, which belongs to the Peerage of Great Britain.
