Baron Zouche

Baron Zouche is a hereditary British title of nobility, was previously created three times in the Peerage of England, always to members of la Zouche family.

As with many ancient baronies of the Peerage of England, the creation was not by appointment of a person to Peer ( letters patent ), but by the fact that the person was asked to take a seat in the House of Lords ( writ of summons ). A special feature of these baronies by writ is that they can also be inherited in the female line, if no children are present. However applies between several sisters - brothers - not unlike the principle of primogeniture. Since the title can not be shared or held in common but the title then rests, however, if no sons, several daughters present ( falls into abeyance ). Everyone can then jointly entitled to request the termination of the suspension at the crown.

Ceremonies

The title was first created in 1299 when Alan la Zouche was appointed Baron la Zouche of Ashby to parliament. However, since he had no sons, two daughters, rests the title since his death in 1314.

The second ceremony took place was in 1308 when William la Zouche, a brother of the first Baron ceremony, invited as Baron Zouche, of Haryngworth to take a seat in the House of Lords. This dignity rested from 1625 to 1815, however, still exists today.

For the third time in 1323 the title was awarded to another member of the family when William la Zouche, Baron Zouche of Mortimer as accepted the mandate entrusted to him. This barony has been dormant since 1406, when the fifth Baroness died without leaving a male descendant.

More titles

The fifth Baron of the second ceremony married Alice Seymour, 6th Baroness St Maur. This title was also a barony by writ, which belonged to the Peerage of England. Their son inherited both titles, which were merged to the death of the eleventh Baron. After the dignitaries had been allowed to stand for almost 200 years, in 1815 only the title of Baron Zouche, but not Baron St Maur, Sir Cecil Bishopp, 8th Baronet, of Parham was awarded.

The aforementioned baronetcy, which belongs to the Baronetage of England, was the death of the twelfth baron to a cousin.
