Barren Island (Andaman Islands)

Barren Iceland is a small volcanic island in the Indian Ocean, which belongs to the archipelago of Andaman and about 100 km east of the main islands is located. It has a diameter of about 4 km, an area of ​​about 8 square kilometers and reaches a height of 354 meters above the sea. Barren Iceland is uninhabited and belongs politically to the Indian union territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

The volcano -type stratovolcano located on the island is relatively active. Already on 12 May 1787 eruption was registered, which was shown to Port Blair, the capital of the Andaman Islands. Further outbreaks occurred among others on March 24, 1789 ( explosive eruption ), December 20, 1795 and November 1803 to January 1804, March 1832, 29 March and October 1991 (discharge of 2.6 million cubic meters of lava and 5.2 million cubic meters ash), from December 1994 to June 1995 (discharge of 2.3 million cubic meters of lava and ash), from 26 May 2005 to December 2007 and last since 13 May 2008 ( explosive eruptions and lava flows ). From seabed expected, the volcano rises to a height of 2250 m, the caldera measures about 2 km in diameter.

150 km northeast of Barren Iceland is located on Narkondam another volcano in the archipelago.
