Barrett REC7

The Barrett REC7 (REC represents closely reliability -enhanced carbine. " Carbine with increased reliability ") is an assault rifle of the company Barrett Firearms Manufacturing, Inc. It was developed as a possible replacement for the currently serving as Ordonnanzwaffe the U.S. forces assault rifles of the type M16 and M4 developed.

Development

The REC7 is not a complete rewrite, but uses the shaft, trigger group and the piston of the M4 and is also an evolution of the Barrett M468, which was developed after the demolition of the XM8 project. The M468 still has a direct gas purchases, as is the case with the M16/M4-Familie, but is otherwise identical to the REC7. Designed as a gas operated REC7 used similar to the system used in the HK G36 is no direct gas purchases more, but a gas piston drive system. The indirect gas purchases get significantly less carbon deposits and heat checking the chamber, so there is always less pollution, corrosion and heat. Due to these circumstances the overall reliability and safety of the rifle is increased, for example, the probability that there is a cook off is reduced. For the rebuilding of the entire upper assembly of an M4, so the closure, the run with the gas collection system, the chamber, the hand guard and the objective lens can be exchanged for the corresponding module of the REC7. This could be the current stock of U.S. forces to assault rifles of the type M4 be relatively easily converted. After the conversion, the rifle, the newly developed cartridge in caliber 6.8mm Remington SPC use up. Their projectile achieved compared to the previously used the caliber 5.56 × 45 mm NATO a greater stopping power in the target and by the greater panache and a longer range.
