Barrington J. Bayley

Barrington John Bayley ( born April 9, 1937 in Birmingham, † 14 October 2008) was a British science fiction author. He published his works mostly as Barrington J. Bayley, but also under the pseudonyms Alan Aumbry, John Diamond, PF Woods and in collaboration with Michael Moorcock as Michael Barrington.

Life

Barrington J. Bayley grew up in Newport ( Shropshire ) on, worked in various professions ( as a clerk in a coal mine and briefly as a reporter for the Wellington Journal ) and joined the Royal Air Force in 1955. At this time, his first short story Combat 's End had already been printed in a magazine. He left the RAF in 1957 and was from then on worked as a freelance writer for various newspapers and magazines, usually under a pseudonym. In the 1960s, his short stories appeared regularly in the magazine New Worlds, and later in Interzone. His Story A Crab Must Try in 1996 won the British Science Fiction Association Award, and The Worms of Hess got the 2000 Interzone Poll Award.

In 1970 he published his first novel Star virus, which appeared in Germany in the science fiction series Gemini. Overall, only a small part of his books appeared in German translation. His novel The Zen Gun 1983 was nominated for the Philip K. Dick Award.

Barrington J. Bayley died in 2008 from complications due to colon cancer.
