Barry Beck

Barry David Beck ( born June 3, 1957 in Vancouver, British Columbia ) is a Canadian ice hockey player (defender) who played from 1977 to 1990 for the Colorado Rockies, New York Rangers and Los Angeles Kings in the National Hockey League.

Career

Beck played during his junior time together with Stan Smyl at the New Westminster Bruins in the Western Canada Hockey League. For three consecutive years, he reached with his team to the finals of the Memorial Cup, the Bruins were able to win in 1977. The Colorado Rockies selected him in the NHL Amateur Draft 1977 as a second player in the first round. Also in the WHA Amateur Draft 1977, the Calgary Cowboys use the second draft law for Beck.

He opted for the Rockies and the NHL. There he succeeded at first breakthrough. He played a great rookie season with 22 goals, 38 templates and 60 points, at which time a best performance for a rookie defenseman. It was not until eleven years later Brian Leetch exceeded these values. When choosing the Rookie of the Year, he finished behind Mike Bossy second place. In his first season he represented his team in the NHL All-Star Game, for which he was nominated for five consecutive years. After ten games in the season 1979/80 moved in exchange for five players to the New York Rangers. With the Rangers, he soon became the new team captain and was a great support to the defensive. In 1981 he represented his country at the Canada Cup. Injury accompanied him over the years, so that he ended his career during the 1985/86 season. For the 1989/90 season he was persuaded and played 52 games for the Los Angeles Kings superstar Wayne Gretzky.

A new challenge was Beck in 2006 when he took over the position of General Manager at the Hong Kong Academy of Ice Hockey.
