Barry (dog)

The Saint Bernard Barry (* 1800 on the Great St. Bernard, † 1814 in Bern ) was a famous avalanche dog.

He was employed by the canons of the Hospice on the Great St. Bernard and is said to have saved the lives of over forty people. After he had been mistaken for a wolf and critically injured avalanche victims, he was taken in 1812 at the request of the Prior to Bern, where he died of old age 1814. After his death he was prepared to make " this faithful dog who saved so many lives, will not be forgotten after his death so soon. " His stuffed fur is part of the collection of the Albert-Heim Foundation and is now in a display case at the entrance to the Natural History Museum of Bern civic community.

The fact that Barry always a keg of liquor to have worn around the neck, through which the half forenen avalanche victims could warm up, is a historically unverifiable legend.

In the dog cemetery in Asnières- sur -Seine, near Paris, a monument was erected for Barry. The Barry - story was edited on film: 1949 under the title of Barry ( Barry - The hero of St. Bernard) in France and in 1977 under the title of Barry of the Great St. Bernard ( Barry, the Saint Bernard ) of Walt Disney Studios.

Avalanche beacons are still referred to as Barryvox; Some manufacturers also use this as a product name.
