Barry Hannah

Howard Barry Hannah ( born April 23, 1942 in Meridian, Mississippi, USA, † March 1, 2010 in Oxford, Mississippi) was an American literary scholar and writer.

Life and work

After attending Mississippi College in Clinton, he studied from 1964 to 1967 at the University of Arkansas and graduated in 1967 with a Master of Fine Arts from.

1972 his first novel, "Geronimo Rex " was released. For this he was not only awarded the William Faulkner Award, but also received a nomination for the National Book Award. His stories appeared in 1996 High Lonesome received a nomination for the Pulitzer Prize.

In 1983 he was appointed Professor of Creative Writing at the University of Mississippi and has held this teaching until his death. After his death, the University devoted its annual conference book of his literary work.

Hannah loved except the letter motorcycling and the alcohol ( "hard -drinking lifestyle" ). Since 1995, a cancer disease was discovered, he received chemotherapy. He died recently at the consequences of myocardial infarction. Two of his marriages ended in divorce. He left a third wife, two sons and a daughter. The book Sick Soldier at Your Door appeared posthumously.
