Bartolomé de Torres Naharro

Bartolomé de Torres Naharro (* 1485 in Torre de Miguel Sesmero, Badajoz province, † 1524) was a Spanish poet and playwright.

Life

Torres Naharro was both soldier and priest. Torres Naharro came in Moorish captivity (Algiers ). He entered the service of Cardinal Giulio de ' Medici, the future Pope Clement VII, at whose court most of his works created after his ordination in Rome. His collection of seven plays, " Propalladia ", appeared in 1517 in Naples, with a preface in which he laid down his views on various genres of drama. The most famous piece, " Himenea ", is considered the first Spanish drama in which the question of honor is treated. His pieces are rich in expression and contain many obscene passages. From them saith the cosmopolitan spirit of Hochrainaissance. Torres Naharro becomes the precursor of the Golden Age of Spanish drama in the late 16th century. He also left poems that sing the glory of the motherland and love. His works were banned in 1559 and set to the index. They appeared in " purified " form in the years from 1573.
