Bärwalder See

Lake left of the mine Bärwalde

The Bärwalder Lake (also called memory Bärwalde, Upper Sorbian Bjerwałdski JĘZOR ), with an area of 13 km ², the largest lake in Saxony and the third largest lake in the Lusatian Lakeland. It is located in the municipality oberlausitzischen Boxberg / OL between the towns of Boxberg, Klitten and Uhyst. The eponymous place Bärwalde is located north of the lake.

The lake

The Bärwalder lake lies in the landscape park Bärwalder Lake, a mining landscape that is reclaimed from the LMBV. The lake itself is the residual hole of the pit Bärwalde. Its flooding began on 13 November 1997 and should be completed in 2007. Lack of rainfall has delayed this goal several times. In April 2008, the lower storage blade and one year was 123 meters above sea level for the first time later, with 125 meters reaches the upper blade storage in April 2009. This is completed with the first attainment of the full storage condition, the actual flooding. Is fed to the lake from the river, the Schilenburgkanal and the Dürr Bacher flow. About the Black Schoeps part of the water flows back into the river Spree.

The name memory Bärwalde indicates that the lake has the function of a water management storage basin. In addition to directly northwest lying reservoirs Lohsa II are 25 million cubic meters from 174 million cubic meters of water ( maximum volume ) are available. This is the Bärwalder lake, as measured by the usable storage space, the sixth-largest reservoir in Saxony. The memory Bärwalde and Lohsa II are among other things the supply of the Boxberg power plant with hot water and regulate the water level of the river Spree. The latter is particularly necessary for adequate water supply in the Spreewald Biosphere Reserve and in Berlin.
