Basel Convention

The Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal of 22 March 1989, also known as the Basel Convention ( full title: Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and Their Disposal) is an international environmental agreement, has introduced an environmentally sound waste management and regulates the control of transboundary movement of hazardous wastes.

Participants and entry into force

It entered into force the agreement on 5 May 1992. Switzerland is since January 31, 1990, Austria since 12 January 1993 Germany since July 20, 1995 contractors. The European Union has implemented the Directives in the EU Waste Shipment Regulation for all Member States legally binding (which came into force in 1993, which came into use since 6 May 1994 2007 repealed ). It has been replaced by Regulation ( EC) No 1013/ 2006 of the European Parliament and of the Council ( 14 June 2006) on shipments of waste.

The United States is the only developed country that has so far refused to ratify what is denounced by many sites such as Greenpeace and the Basel Action Network in Seattle, as the U.S. export around 80 percent of their electronic waste. Otherwise acceded to the present date, the 170 states of the agreement:
