The Theodor Church is an Evangelical Reformed Church in the city of Basel. The Gothic church is located in the Wettstein - quarters and is dedicated to St. Theodore.

History

The church was first mentioned in documents in 1084. At the beginning of the 12th century it belonged to the monastery of St. Alban. It is located upriver from today's small Basel later in the abandoned village of Lower Basel, the canonically to the diocese of Constance, a fundamental right but was at that time already for the Diocese of Basel. Tombs dating from the 8th century were found in 1947 within the church Outside the church in 1984 and 1993 burial sites were discovered in the 11th century over the years. The construction of the bridge over the Rhine in 1225, a part of the community moved downriver, closer to the bridge on. So the community now missing some churchgoers and especially their church taxes. The financial compensation, the daughter chapel of St. Nicholas was built in 1255 near the bridge over the Rhine. Against that time was the first time St. Theodor be detected as patron of the Mother Church.

In the Basel earthquake in 1356, large parts of this church were severely damaged. Reports from 1402 indicate the extent of the destruction, as follows: [ The church was ] shocked, upset and taken out of the mold. Both church towers collapsed in part, the altar was also badly damaged. Only the north tower was later rebuilt.

In the church concerts are performed occasionally.

Organ

The organ was built by the organ builders Alfred and Daniel Kern ( Strasbourg). The instrument has 37 stops on three manuals and pedal. The tracker action are mechanical.
