Bashan

Bashan, "Land of the Giants ", is a former territory in the land of Canaan, which is especially mentioned in the Old Testament.

History

The original inhabitants of the highlands were the Rephaim, an Amorite tribe was ruled by a king (Gen 14.5 EU). In the Old Testament the kingdom of Bashan as the " rest of the Rephaim " (Josh. 12.4 EU) is called.

According to the Bible Bashan was conquered by the people of Israel, as the king of Bashan, Og, it refused to transit and fight it then came (Num 21,33 EU). Bashan included, from the Jordan to the cities Salcha and Edrei ( Edrei located in present-day Syria ), at that time 60 strongly fortified towns, was carried out at the population after the defeat of Og the so-called God's spell - the extermination of the inhabitants ( Lev 3 EU ).

The Bible calls the last of the giant Og of Bashan. His grave was nine cubits long and four cubits wide (4.05 x 1.80 m) was (Deut. 3.11 EU). According to the Bible Bashan went after the conquest of Jair the son of Manasseh, of the land called " villages of Jair ".
