Basilio Pompilj

Basilio Cardinal Pompilj ( born April 16, 1858 in Spoleto, Perugia, Italy, † May 5, 1931 in Rome ) was a Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.

Life

Basilio Pompilj studied at the Pontifical Roman Seminary in Rome, the subjects philosophy and Catholic theology. He received on December 5, 1888 Sacrament of Holy Orders, and then worked as a parish pastor in the diocese of Rome. In 1891, he was also working for the Council Congregation of the Curia. In 1899 he received the appointment as apostolic prothonotary, in 1908 he was appointed by Pope Pius X. Secretary of the Congregation Council. On November 27, 1911 Basilio Pompilj was taken as a cardinal deacon with the title of Santa Maria in Domnica diakonia in the College of Cardinals.

On 5 May 1913 he became the Cardinal Vicar, appointed Titular Archbishop of Philippi, Auxiliary Bishop of Rome. He received his episcopal consecration on 11 May of the same year Cardinal Antonio Agliardi. Basilio Pompilj took both 1914 and 1922 part of the conclave. In October 1914, he became archpriest of the Lateran Basilica, in March 1917 he became Cardinal Bishop of Velletri. As an Pontifical Legate, he represented the Pope at several celebrations.

Basilio Pompilj died on May 5, 1931 in Rome and was buried in the local cemetery " Campo Verano ". In 1933 his remains were transferred to the Cathedral of Spoleto.
