Başkale ( Turkish for main castle; Ադամակերտ Adamakert Armenian, Kurdish Elbak ) is a town and a district in Turkey. It belongs to the province of Van in Eastern Anatolia and is located on the border with Iran. Başkale located in the southeast of the province and is bordered to the south by the province of Hakkari and on the east by Iran. The district has 64 216 inhabitants Başkale, the city 13,855 (as of 2011 ). The city lies at the foot of the mountain Başkale İspiriz ( 3668 m).

In the district there is the Armenian Holy Cross Monastery of Soradir and Saint Bartholomew Monastery, which was converted after the genocide of the Armenians in 1915 in a military training area.
