Bass drum#Double bass drum

Double bass is a Zweifußtechnik the drumming, which provides a fast, driving rhythms and especially in metal, but has found use in hardcore punk. For the first time this form of drumming was developed in the 1940s by Louie Bellson as part of the Big Bands.

The drummer uses either of two bass drums ( Big drums, bass drums) or by using so-called double pedal, which directs the Schlegel two pedals on a drum. By alternately stepping on two pedals, the drummer can achieve about twice as fast bass drum cadence as in the game with only one foot. Particularly fast cadence can be achieved by alternately stepping with toe and heel of both feet ( " heel-toe technique" ). By appropriate workout speeds can be achieved, which can be assigned by non skilled in the art often no longer human pedal kicks. The use of two bass drums has the advantage that the skins of the two drums twice as long to fade out and it makes them sound better. In addition, the feeling is increased, since now the left foot strikes on its own bass drum and is not deflected by a mechanism to the other. The disadvantage, however, is that it is very difficult, two bass drums to vote on exactly the same pitch, so often at live concerts, the second bass drum is used only for optical reasons. The game is played with a double pedal, whose modern and high-quality representatives barely have the weakness of the more common hard left, so-called slave pedal. In addition, the orientation and configuration of the drums is more complex than in the game with only a bass drum.

Because the game with two bass drums but also quite different moods of the drums may be desirable, they are often tuned to two different pitches or uses two different sized bass drums. This serves to make the sound of the double bass playing more dynamic and interesting.

The Canadian Tim Waterson is one of the fastest double bass players worldwide; he held, among others, over several years the record in the "single stroke" game with over 1000 beats per minute.
