Basse-Terre Island

Basse -Terre is the western and larger of the two main islands of the French overseas departments of Guadeloupe in the Caribbean ( 848 km ²). The eastern main island called Grande -Terre. On the island, the capital of Guadeloupe is also called Basse- Terre.

This island is of volcanic origin, with the (GDS ) is to be on Basse -Terre 200,000 years old Grand- Découverte - Soufrière volcano complex. The complex is still classified with its 1467m high La Soufriere as active. Surrounding this volcanic complex attended the outgassing chlorine vapors for a forest-free zone that is unique to the island otherwise heavily forested.
