Batignolles

Les Batignolles, formerly an independent rural community in the north of Paris, since 1860, the 67th of the 80 district of the city and part of the 17th arrondissement.

Location

The district is bounded on the south by the Boulevard des Batignolles, in the southwest by the Rue de Levis and the rue de Tocqueville, on the north by the Boulevard Périphérique, and on the east by the rue Lemercier, Rue de la Condamine and the Avenue de Clichy.

The former village ended in the northwest of the present Rue Cardinet, but handed the east side of the Boulevard de Clichy far beyond the borders of present-day district addition until well into the current 18th district. It included almost all of the currently " Les Epinettes " said district, with the exception of the north of the present Rue Ernest Roche lying area and extended to the east to the 18th arrondissement. There were Departmental n ° 36 (now Rue Marcadet ) and the gypsum mines, on which in 1825 the Cimetière de Montmartre was applied, the limit of the municipality of Montmartre, the former route.

History

It is unclear, the meaning of the name Batignolles. Presumably, the name derives from the Latin Batillus, the mill ' from. The origin but could also come from Provençal, where bastidiole as much as cottage means. The municipality had around 1830 together with the adjacent Monceau no more than 3,500 inhabitants. The hitherto of Clichy Batignolles was managed by a decree of Napoleon III. incorporated on January 1, 1860 in Paris. In the second half of the 19th century settled in the Quartier des Batignolles numerous artists. These included the writer Stéphane Mallarmé and painter Édouard Manet. A well-known meeting place for artists of that time was the Café Guerbois on the Avenue Clichy No. 9 and the artists met there, were also known as Groupe des Batignolles. Henri Fantin -Latour called his group portrait of Manet and his artist friends Un atelier aux Batignolles (1870 ).

Attractions

At the heart of the Quartier des Batignolles is the Church of Sainte -Marie des Batignolles, which is located at the northern end of Rue des Batignolles. Just behind the church is the Square des Batignolles.
