After its founding in 1872, it soon became one of the largest settlements of Métis and was in 1885 during the Northwest Rebellion seat of the Provisional Government of Saskatchewan Métis and last scene of the decisive Battle of Batoche. From 1888 until the founding of Saskatchewan Batoche 1905 was an electoral district within the time still full most of Canada's Northwest Territories.
