Batson (Texas)

Batson is an unincorporated settlement that is located directly on State Highway 105 in the south west of Hardin Country, Texas.

The settlement was originally founded in 1840 by brothers Batson. Later they built a church, which also served as a school.

In October 1903, a oil field was discovered in the north of the city, and soon after, the population increased rapidly and there arose shops, hotels and restaurants. In the 1920s, the oil production in the Batson Dome Field was reduced, resulting in the population represents a decline of about 10,000 to about 600 residents. In March 1935, another oil field discovery, the population increased again slightly, but over the next few decades, the population declined again. Old maps from 1936 show two churches, two stores, a school and a post office in the community. From 1950 to 1970, the population fell to around 200 inhabitants. In 2000, a further 140 residents were recorded.
