Battle of Achelous (917)

The Battle of Anchialos ( Bulgarian Битката при Ахелой / Bitkata pri Acheloj, Greek: Μάχη του Αχελώου ) took place on 20 August 917 at the mouth of the river Acheloj into the Black Sea, near the city Anchialos (now Pomorie ) and the present-day Bulgarian city Acheloj instead. The battle was a military and political disaster for the Byzantine Empire. After the attack, the Bulgarian cavalry, led by the king Simeon, fled the Byzantine soldiers. Riverside Acheloj the Bulgarian troops reached the fugitives. The Byzantine army was destroyed, many were drowned in the river. The victory was a great success for the Bulgarian king, who shortly afterwards in Constantinople Opel to the Emperor ( Tsar ) and was crowned appoint the Bulgarian Church leader Patriarch.
