The Battle of Hsimucheng (Chinese析木 城, Pinyin Xīmùchéng, also known as the Battle of Hse -mu -cheng ) was held on July 31, 1904 between the Imperial Japanese Army and the Imperial Russian Army in the vicinity of the former Manchurian village Ximucheng. The former village is now the inhabitants of Community Ximu (析木 社区), the seat of government of the greater community Ximu (析木 镇) in the independent city Haicheng, which belongs to the administrative area of the prefecture-level city of Anshan in Liaoning province. She was a minor land battle, which took place in the Russo- Japanese War.

Positioning and preparation

From the Japanese side, the 5th and 10th Division of the Japanese 4th Army were involved under Lieutenant-General Nozu Michitsura and some units of the 2nd Army. On the Russian side the Russian II Siberian Army Corps was involved under the command of Lieutenant General Mikhail Sassulitsch, which included some cavalry units under the command of General Pavel Mishchenko.

After the defeat at the Battle of Tashihchiao the Second Siberian Army Corps had retreated to the village Ximucheng. General Sassulitsch had moved with his 36 battalions and 86 guns there position, but was limited by mountainous terrain in an exposed position.

Battle

On July 31, 1904 at 2:00 clock in the morning the Japanese 10th Division attacked with a reserve brigade in a frontal attack on the Russian positions. Meanwhile, the Japanese 5th Division moved in front on the left wing to cut the Russians to retreat. The Russian soldiers fought all day against some of the Japanese attacks, but threatened on the Russian right wing a grip of the Japanese 5th Division, which had meanwhile been reinforced with units of the 3rd Division of the 2nd Army. At 23:00 clock General Sassulitsch received from his commander General Kuropatkin the command to withdraw to Haicheng.

Losses and consequences

The Russians had to complain 1,217 casualties, while the Japanese lost 836 men.

The Japanese pursued the Russians, so there was the Battle of Liaoyang few weeks later.
