Battle of Ingavi

The Battle of Ingavi took place on 18 November in 1841 and secured the independence of Bolivia.

Near the city Viacha it came to the battle between the 5,199 -strong Peruvian invasion army and the 3,788 man counting Bolivian troops.

After both armies had placed in closed battle formation on the plateau east of the village Viacha, clashed head-on the armies. The Peruvian commander, General Gamarra was in the front line in the center of his troops. After he had been mortally wounded in battle, the morale of the Peruvian troops broke down and the Bolivian troops quickly gained the upper hand. After just 50 minutes, the battle ended with a victory in Bolivia.

The booty amounted to four Peruvian flags, eight guns, 3100 guns, 290 cavalry lances and the entire Peruvian car fleet. 24 senior officers, 150 officers and 3200 soldiers troops were taken prisoner. Among the prisoners was also later Peruvian President Ramon Castilla. This victory secured the independence of Bolivia. In addition to the death of the Peruvian Supreme Commander and of the resultant confusion of greater cohesion and better training of Bolivian soldiers was ( many were veterans of the army of Marshal Santa Cruz ) battle decisively.
