The naval battle before Korsakov took place on 7 Augustjul. / August 20 1904greg. between the Russian protected cruiser Novik and the two Japanese cruisers protected Tsushima and Chitose before Korsakov in Aniwa Bay instead. The Nowik was set by their own occupation due.

Prehistory

In the Battle of the Yellow Sea, the Russian fleet of the Japanese blockade of Port Arthur tried to escape. The attempt failed in battle with the Japanese fleet in the Nowik was slightly damaged by three hits and two of the crew died. Most Russian ships turned after two hours of battle and the death of the squadron bosses again to Port Arthur.

The Nowik and some other Russian ships tried to flee to the German base Jiaozhou Bay. Besides the Nowik all ships were interned. She left Tsingtao and tried to run around the Japanese islands in the East, to reach Vladivostok. She wanted to make a stopover before Korsakov to stash coals.

Battle

On 20 August 1904, the Nowik was discovered by a Japanese transporter, when she took over before Korsakov coals. The Nowik was caught in the Aniwa bay and forced to accept a battle with the superior artillery Tsushima. In battle, she received five hits, three of them under the water line. Two sailors were killed and several injured. As even the cruiser Chitose arrived, sank the Russian occupation before their ship Korsakov, as they saw no chance of escape more.

General Lyapunow, the military governor of Sakhalin had that involved Nowik in his defense strategy of the island. With the loss of the cruiser the coast of Sakhalin was completely unprotected, and on July 7, 1905, Japanese troops landed at Korsakov and Alexandrovski post.
