Battle of Long Island

The Battle of Long Iceland took place on August 27, 1776 in what is now Prospect Park ( Brooklyn, New York) in the American War of Independence instead.

Background

When the British commander, Sir William Howe in the spring of 1776 Boston was clear, George Washington foresaw correctly that the British would advance to New York to take the city. Washington was then secure the city.

The Battle

Howe decided to attack the American units on the Brooklyn Heights. On August 22, landed about 10,000 British soldiers and on the morning of August 27 began the fighting. At noon, the outnumbered American troops were defeated and had to be covered by their artillery units stationed on Governors Iceland, to beat a retreat.
