Battle of the Siler River

The Second Battle of the Silarus or Battle of Lucania was a battle between Romans and rebellious slaves by 71 BC

Prehistory

The Spartacusaufstand had found in the past few years so many followers among the angry slaves, that the army which now encompassed 200,000 already armed slaves to eyewitness accounts, a serious threat to the Roman Empire was. Crassus in 72 BC recruited eight Roman legions and she reinforced by troops of the allies. Addition, there was an army of Gnaeus Pompeius, who just returned from Spain. When Spartacus and his army in Campania fled from Pompey, Crassus came to him in the way. To 71 BC, the two met at Silarus armies.

Course

Spartacus killed after he saw the enemy army, his horse with the words: "If we lose, I do not need more horse. If we win, I'll have a lot of horses. " The Roman legionaries were better drilled and well armed. Probably Spartacus was killed soon after the start of the battle ( his body was, however, not found). After the death of their general left a lot of courage and they surrendered to the Romans. Crassus did crucify them later. The rest of the slave army fled and before Pompey arrived at Silarus, the battle was already beaten. On his march he started a few thousand fugitives.

The 6,000 prisoners who were taken in the battle, the Romans crucified along the Appian Way. The cruel memorial ran from Capua to Rome. Accordingly, the third slave revolt of Rome was defeated.
