Bawe Island

Bawe (formerly also Telegraph Island) is a small island of the Zanzibar archipelago (Tanzania ) in the Indian Ocean. The elongated island extends from the northeast to the southwest over a length of 1 kilometer at its widest point it measures a good 500 meters. Bawe is located about 5.8 kilometers from Zanzibar town on the west coast of Unguja. On the island, private property is a luxury hotel. The waters around the island are suitable as diving area.

History

In colonial times to the end of the 19th century Bawe was also known as " Telegraph Island". Here resulted from different directions incoming telegraph cable. The telegraph company of there had a small stone house that could be used in an emergency as a telegraph station.
