Bay Harbor Islands is a city in Miami -Dade County in the U.S. state of Florida with 5,628 inhabitants ( 2010).

Geography

The city consists of two located in the Biscayne Bay islands. On the western of which are exclusively single-family homes, while on the eastern island is a business district and multi-family homes exist. Surrounding municipalities are North Miami, Bal Harbour, Surfside and Indian Creek.

History

The city was founded by Shepard Broad, who in 1920 emigrated from Pinsk in Russia coming to the United States. 1945 Broad acquired two undeveloped islands between the mainland in the north of Miami and the elongated island, is located on the Miami Beach. 1947 Bay Harbor Islands was registered as a Town. It is now run by an elected city council of seven members.

The first building permit was applied for on 15 June 1947, within four years developed 46 houses, in which about 550 people lived. The concept of advertising on the westerly 103 -acre island's only single-family homes, comes from Broad. The eastern island has an area of 150 acres and on it there next to multi-family apartment buildings and a small business district.

1951, the road link ( the Broad Causeway ) was opened on the mainland.

Demographics

According to the 2010 census, the then 5,628 inhabitants distributed to 3,199 households. The population density was 5628.0 inh. / Km ². 91.5 % of the population were white, 2.5% African American, 0.2% Native American and 1.2% Asian Americans. 2.2% were members of other ethnic groups and 2.3% in different ethnic groups. 46.3 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino.

In 2010, children under the age of 18 and 29.1 % of all households lived in 27.4 % of all households with persons at least 65 years. 55.3 % of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or a parent with offspring ). The average size of a household was 2.17 persons and the average family size is 2.88 people.

23.1% of the population were younger than 20 years, 25.2% were 20-39 years old, 29.7% were 40-59 years old and 21.9 % were at least 60 years old. The median age was 41 years. 46.5 % of the population were male and 53.5 % female.

The average annual income was $ 55,731, while 12.4 % of the population lived below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the mother tongue of 52.04 % of the population spoke Spanish 43.90 % and 4.06 % had a different mother tongue.

Traffic

Through the city leads the Florida State Road 922 The nearest airports are Opa- locka Executive Airport the (national, 15 km away) and Miami International Airport ( 25 km).

Crime

The crime rate in 2010 was 78 points ( U.S. average: 266 points ) in the low range. There was a rape, 28 burglaries, 30 thefts and six car thefts.
