Bay of Pigs

The Bay of Pigs ( Bahia de Cochinos Spanish ) with the beaches of Playa Girón and Playa Larga is a bay on the south coast of Cuba. It forms the eastern edge of the Zapata Peninsula.

The name derives not from pigs (Spanish Cochinos ), but of Caribbean trigger fish, which are also called Cochinos in Cuba.

Invasion

Between 17 and April 19, 1961 failed here a CIA -supported invasion by Cuban exiles against the government of Fidel Castro. The invasion marked a first peak of the anti- Cuban U.S. actions.

In the UN Security Council, there were debates about the legality of the attack. However, Cuba failed in his application to the United States to condemn the aggressor, the veto power of the United States.
