Bayil

Bailov (also Bajilow ) is a peninsula in the homonymous district of the Azerbaijani capital, Baku, on which are the ruins of a small fort.

History

The fortress was 1234/35 built by architect Abu Rashid ibn Schirwaner Dajd -ad -din. It was probably destroyed by an earthquake and for many centuries was covered by water. After the water level of the Caspian Sea was like she was discovered in the 1870s by the Russian Orientalists I. Berezin. This was followed by excavations.

Works of art

In the ruins remains were excavated by ornaments, a several meters long frieze probably went around the castle walls and towers. In addition, several hundred tablets of stone with Persian inscriptions, which are decorated with human and animal figures. This representation is a special feature for the Islamic art of Azerbaijan. The panels of master stonemason Rashid are probably made ​​in other places, and was later brought to the fortress. Stylistically similar to Georgian, Armenian, Dagestani and Russian carvings from the 13th century. The jewelry shown here illustrates Sassanid influence.
