History

Architectural History

The plans for the construction of this line going back to the 1860s. Originally a longer route was planned to the west across Forchheim Hoechstadt to Rothenburg ob der Tauber, in the east to the Fichtelgebirge. Also a connection to Bamberg via Scheßlitz was thinking. For cost reasons ( difficult topography ) only the above line was realized. Its construction took place from 1902 to 1904, on 12 March 1904 she was opened. The travel time for the nearly 33 -kilometer route at that time was two hours. Initially, only three pairs of trains per day were traveling.

Rolling stock

In the provincial railroad period ( until 1920 ) and the epoch of the DRG were stationed XI in Bayreuth Bavarian local railway locomotives of series D VII, VIII D and D. In the transfer traffic, the D Series II came out on the track. Steam -driven engine locomotives of the ML 2/2 series were stationed up in the 1920s in Thurnau and perverse thus at least the first few kilometers from the train station to the old town of Bayreuth. From about 1929, the series was 98.10 used in Bayreuth at home and at all three branch lines. In 1949 it was replaced by the Series 98.11, which sailed the route with the Series 64 until the end of steam operation.

With the rail buses VT 95 began in the 1950s a the Verdieselung, later, the V 100 series replaced the steam locomotives. In the handover traffic even shunting the types Köf II, III and V Köf 60 came on the track. Towards the end of the operation reversed schedule multiple units of the series VT 24 and 614, also built for a Danish private railway double railcars ( DUEWAG railcar type Ym) came in 1968/69 to test the regular transport into the insert.

Route description

The exact length of the track ( the middle of the premises of the end stations ) was 32.73 kilometers (direct distance 20.5 km ). The Central Station Bayreuth is 343.72 m above sea level, the terminus Hollfeld was 41.58 m higher. The highest point of the route was between Pitter village and Mistelgau ( 439.82 m ), the lowest by the branch cross stone on the bridge over the Sendelbach ( 346.90 m). The smallest curve radius was 250 meters, the largest slope was 19.2 ‰ ( between Plank rock and Wadendorf ). From the main station to the branching point Kreuzenstein the track of 1877 went into operation in single-track main line after Nennslingen was shared in both directions. The single-track main line also after Kirchenlaibach runs parallel to get there, so in this section may falsely give the impression of a double-track line.

The taken as stop operating station Kreuzenstein was upgraded by extending the railway tracks to the station later, but remained unoccupied. There was a siding to a storage tank, a junkyard and other companies. The gasworks of the Bayreuth Stadtwerke (today BEW ) south of the Hofgarten also had its own railway siding. This siding chain in the area of today's university, west of University Street in a narrow track curves to the right from the main track from. It then proceeded initially in a northerly direction, turned in the area of the bridge over the Sendelbach westward and reached after about 800 meters after crossing the Birkenstraße the premises. In the early years the cars were pushed by the locomotive around the track and through a gate into the gas station building. Around 1960 a track system for parking and driving around the trains was set up east of Birch Street. From there the cars by means of a winch, the road crossing could be pulled into the gas station. The plan was a rail connection of the gas works since 1918, it was only built in 1949. Degradation was probably after the closure of the coal gasification plant in the late 1960s before the extension of Sendelbach Street (now University Road ).

About sidings branching off Old Town, between the breakpoint Röhrensee and the Bayreuth train station, BayWa, a coal merchant and a sawmill at the Justus -Liebig -Straße and the warehouses were served in the industrial area at the Otto -Hahn-Straße. Some were still used sporadically in the early 1990s.

On 26 June 1909, the branch line was taken after Thurnau in operation after nearly 1 1/2-jähriger construction. From the main station to the Old Town district, they used the existing infrastructure of Hollfelder web. Immediately at the northwest end of the corresponding converted train station Bayreuth Altstadt they branched off north to Herzoghöhe station.

Shortly after the Old Town station both located in the district Meyernberg brickworks had a shared siding. The subsequent, in 1907, subsequently appointed breakpoint Fantaisie - Ecker village also was still on Bayreuth city.

From the following train stations Mistelgau, Plank rock and Hollfeld had larger, brick office building. The railway stations in Mistelbach and Upper Lake, there were only small agency building in wood. Pitter village, Franconia Hague and stinging village wilt village had loading tracks and were thus stops, the first two unoccupied, in the latter, a railway agent worked. The remaining stations were simple breakpoints. The terminus Hollfeld had three continuous tracks, plus several tracks stump. In machine building, a two standing roundhouse with residential buildings, the train crew could stay. It remained, as well as the train station and a further outbuilding obtained.

Closure

The last ride, a special train with a steam locomotive once used class 64, made on September 28, 1974 to great acclaim of the population. From the originally planned continuity of operations in the pure freight saw off, only to Bayreuth Old Station it has been preserved for 20 years. The degradation of tracks between Bayreuth Altstadt and Hollfeld was very quick, to the upper lake the route was converted to a bike path and paved in the early 2000s.

Between Upper Lake and Plankenfels the railway line to the expansion and straightening of the state road St 2186 was used. The same thing happened with regard to the county road between Mistelgau BT 1 and BT 2 junction with the county road southeast of Hardt (1 km southeast of Franconia Hague). Above the Plank rock crosses the newly built state road St 2191 times the former railway line, which is still used in part as a dirt road. Is again a paved bike path between plunge village and Hollfeld.

In the late 1980s, when the University of Bayreuth was further expanded, setting a breakpoint university was considered by the city council. He was immediately east of the planned bridge over the Emil- Warburg - way would have to combine it with the public buses and at least received the first 0.7 km (from branch cross stone) secured by the wayside. In 1995, the city of Bayreuth signed the contract with the DB through the purchase of the distance from the branch Kreuzenstein to Bayreuth Old Town Station. However, one of her commissioned report came in late 1996 to the conclusion that the reactivation of rail passenger transport is uneconomic. Therefore to projected passenger train operation, it did not come, instead of rebuilding occurred in a bikeway.

Until 1994, occasionally found special trips, usually with a railcar 614 instead. On 31 May 1992, the trainset 614 023 drove on the track. On 30 September 1994 the German railway sparked the goods tariff point Bayreuth Altstadt on, the last freight train DB left the station on 14 October 1994. The last official passenger wrong on 4 June 1995 between Röhrensee and Bayreuth Hauptbahnhof after an on this day railcar of the series had commuted 628 every two hours between pastures mountain and the breakpoint Röhrensee. The last car from one of the connection points was picked up in 1998 by two diesel locomotives of the DFS.

Only about 50 meters of track are substantially obtained in the area old town as a monument. By now, newly constructed on the site between the former branch office stone cross and the Nuremberg street has henceforth obstructed any chance of a re-commissioning.

Others

The writer Hans Max von Aufseß says: " On the local train route Bayreuth Hollfeld there were at Mistelgau an inclined plane on which we got student and cozy ran along beside the panting and crawling Zügchen. When pulled in the overworked engine to fill up with water in Upper Lake on the same route, the passengers had become thirsty. However, after an agreement with the platoon leader could sign his beer wishes. From the restaurant about 200 meters from the Train Station, a waitress with as much Seideln came running, as signaled by whistle of the locomotive and had been pre-ordered. "
