Baz Bahadur

Baz Bahadur was the last sultan of Malwa, an Islamic Sultanate in India. He succeeded his father Shuja'at Khan (r. 1542-1554 ), who had divided his kingdom among his three sons. After Baz Bahadur had assassinated his brother Daulat Khan in the dispute over the succession in a part of the empire and his other brother had fled, he was elevated in 1555 to the Sultan of Malwa all. He ruled as sultan to 1562, was considered a great patron of the arts, and legends about his love affair with the singer Roopmati have survived until today. The polity experienced under his reign, however, a decline, in particular the military threat posed by the Mughal Empire sat Baz Bahadur against little.

When in 1561 the army of Akbar the Sultanate of Malwa attacked under the General Adham Khan, Baz Bahadur was defeated in the battle of Sarangpur. As Roopmati learned of the defeat, she poisoned herself so as not to fall into the hands of the conqueror. The Sultan fled to Khandesh and with its ruler Miran Mubarak and the Sultan of Berar push back the Mughal army. 1562 moved a larger army and conquered, Baz Bahadur fled to the mountains and attacked in the following years again and again to the troops of the Mughal Empire. It repeatedly succeeded only temporarily, retake smaller areas. Finally, he submitted in 1570 the Mughal emperor, who made him commander of a 2,000 -strong cavalry. Baz Bahadur, however, died a short time later.
