Baz Luhrmann
Mark Anthony " Baz " Luhrmann ( born September 17, 1962 in Sydney, New South Wales) is an Australian film director, screenwriter and actor.
Life
Luhrmann attended the Australian Film School National Institute of Dramatic Art After graduation, he founded the theater group, The Six Years Old Company and worked on various musical and opera performances.
His first major success as a director he had in 1990 with a performance of Puccini's opera La Bohème, which was played until 1996 at the famous Sydney Opera House.
In the 1980s, Luhrmann had his first appearances as a film actor in The Winter of Our Dreams (1981) and The Dark Room (1982). In 1992 he made his debut as a film director with Strictly Ballroom, a romantic comedy based on his play of the same. With this film, Luhrmann explained his " Red Curtain " trilogy, which he, William Shakespeare's Romeo Juliet ( with Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes ) and Moulin Rouge ( starring Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor ) graduated. As Red Curtain to refer to a film language that aims to achieve an active participation of the audience in a movie. Part of this language is an extremely simplified action which is interrupted by music and dancing, and thus represents a Western expression of Bollywood films.
In 1996 he founded with his wife, Catherine Martin, the production company Bazmark Inc., with whom he Moulin Rouge produced in the same year William Shakespeare's Romeo Juliet and in 2001.
He achieved fame in 1999 by the setting of a newspaper column. It was a fictitious graduation speech of the journalist Mary Schmich from Chicago, in which they are fictional school graduates with some wisdom on the future way. Luhrmann could recite the text of the actor Lee Perry and put it to music. The unusual song called " Everybody's Free (To Wear Sunscreen ) " found worldwide attention and reached # 1 on the charts even England. Also a German version ( " sunscreen " ) was published, in which Dieter Brandecker speaks the text.
In 2002 he staged the opera " La Boheme " on Broadway. In 2004, he directed the elaborate commercial for the perfume Chanel No.. 5 with Nicole Kidman in the lead role.
After seven years of absence was in November 2008, Luhrmann's fourth feature film, Australia, published. This Luhrmann processed the history of his homeland against the backdrop of the bombing of Darwin during World War II. For the project, he worked with Australian actors and continued his long-standing collaboration with Nicole Kidman continues, which plays the main role alongside Hugh Jackman.
From September 2011 to February 2012 Luhrmann filmed in Sydney 's novel The Great Gatsby in 3-D. Leonardo DiCaprio takes on the role of Jay Gatsby. It was the first collaboration between Baz Luhrmann and DiCaprio since William Shakespeare's Romeo Juliet in 1996. Also starring Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway are and Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan to see. The film opened on May 15, 2013 out of competition the 66th International Film Festival of Cannes.
