BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition

The competition BBC Cardiff Singer of the World ( 1983-2001 only Cardiff Singer of the World ) is a competition for classical singing, which is held by the BBC in Cardiff, Wales in 1983. The bi -annual competition has the genres of opera and song, while men and women are counted in each case together. In addition, an audience prize since 2003.

History and Organization

The competition was launched in 1983 by BBC Wales to life to celebrate the opening of the newly built concert hall St David's Hall in Cardiff. St David's Hall was the seat of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. Since 1983, the competition will take place in June every two years - that is, in odd-numbered years - instead. In 1989, the main competition of opera arias added competition for songs. Who takes part in the music competition, also must compete in the main competition, but not vice versa.

In order to qualify for the final in Cardiff in the autumn of the previous year - even years - of a competitive audition in different places in the world instead. 20 singers are approved for the final round, where per country of origin only one participant is permitted, or the then represent their country. The winner of the Welsh Singers Competition is automatically qualified for participation in the BBC competition, and represented Wales there. Participants must be in the competition year between 18 and 32 years old.

The contest will be decided by a jury consisting of experienced singers, musicians and music experts. Jury members included, among others, Carlo Bergonzi, Marilyn Horne, Gundula Janowitz, Sherrill Milnes, Christoph Prégardien, Joan Sutherland, René Kollo and Gwyneth Jones.

The competition is organized by the BBC Wales and broadcast on BBC Two, BBC Four and BBC Wales TV on TV. On the radio the finals and award winners concert on BBC Radio 3, BBC Radio Wales and BBC Radio Cymru Welsh program can be heard. The competition is supported by the Welsh National Opera and the city of Cardiff.
