BC Žalgiris

Zalgiris Kaunas is a sports club from Lithuania. He is considered the tradition and most successful basketball club in the country. The club takes part in the game operation of the Lithuanian LKL and ULEB Euro League ( 2013/14 season ). In addition, the handball club won in the years 66/67, 67 /68, 68/69 three times in a row, the European Champion Clubs' Cup Ladies.

History

Founded in 1944, Zalgiris Kaunas was five times Soviet Champion in 1947, 1951 and three times in succession from 1985 to 1987 ( with Arvydas Sabonis as a star player and Gintaras Krapikas ) and eleven times runner-up. After the independence of Lithuania Zalgiris Kaunas was repeatedly gain the Lithuanian Champion title. After a decade of unbroken dominance to Kaunas supplies since the late 90 each year a prestigious slugfest with the capital club Lietuvos Rytas from Vilnius.

After Zalgiris Kaunas was in 1985 ( Cup Winners Cup ) and 1986 ( European Champions Cup ) in the finals of European competitions and with Drazen Petrovic drew the short straw only to FC Barcelona and Cibona Zagreb, they won the 1999 European Champion Clubs' Cup. Since then, the team was regularly represented in the Euro League, but managed not to move into the last four.

Arvydas Sabonis is now also the majority owner of the club.

The game is played in the Žalgirio Arena ( 14,503 seats). Earlier halls were the S. Darius and S. - Girėnas sports hall with a capacity of 4350 spectators and the Kaunas sports hall (4000 seats).
