Beatrice of Savoy

Beatrice of Savoy ( * 1200, † 1266 in Les Échelles ) was a daughter of Thomas I of Savoy and Beatrice of Geneva.

On July 5, 1219 Beatrix married to Raymond Berengar V a Count of Provence. After two miscarriages this marriage sprang four daughters, all of whom were major queens thanks to a clever wedding policy at the intersection of German and French territorial interests:

  • Margaret of Provence ∞ Louis IX. the Holy, King of France. The couple had eleven children, including the later to become King of France Philip III. and Robert of Clermont, the founder of the Bourbon dynasty.
  • Eleanor of Provence, Henry III ∞. Plantagenet, King of England. The couple had nine children, including the later to become King of England Edward Longshanks.
  • Sancha of Provence ∞ Richard of Cornwall, Roman- German king. Sancha had three sons with this and thus became the ancestress of the house Cornwallis.
  • Beatrice of Provence ∞ Charles of Anjou, King of Naples and Sicily. The couple had seven children, including the later to become King of Naples and Sicily, Charles II of Anjou, who afterwards became Latin Empress Beatrix and afterwards became Queen of Hungary Isabella.
