Beaumont-en-Argonne

Beaumont -en- Argonne is a commune in the Ardennes department of the Champagne -Ardenne region. It belongs to the district Sedan, to the canton of Mouzon and was founded in 1994 Association of Municipalities Trois Cantons.

Geography

The 466 inhabitants (1 January 2011 ) scoring community Beaumont -en- Argonne is located in the north of France, about 25 kilometers from the Belgian border. Nearest large towns are Sedan ( 25 km) and Charleville- Mézières (45 km).

The 31 -square-mile municipality of Beaumont in the east of the department of Ardennes includes a portion of the Argonne, a landscape between the Aisne and Meuse. The town itself is situated in a valley at about 230 meters above sea level. The valley forms the little stream Ruisseau de Beaumont, which rises west of the town center. It ends after just three kilometers drive into the Meuse. The Ruisseau la Wame, also a Maas Creek, forms the southwestern boundary of the municipality - at the same time limit the Lorraine region. North and south of the valley prevails in a gently undulating landscape of arable land. The west and south of the municipal area is dominated by forest. The forest Bois de Sommauthe is part of the large contiguous forest area Forêt de Belval.

Neighboring communities of Beaumont are Yoncq and Mouzon in the north, Létanne in the east, Laneuveville -sur -Meuse in the southeast, Belval- Bois -des- Dames in the south, Vaux -en- Dieulet, Sommauthe and Saint- Pierremont in the southwest, La Berlière in the West and La Besace in the northwest.

History

Beaumont and the immediate area was the scene of fierce fighting in the German -Prussian War and the First World War (including in the Meuse -Argonne Offensive ). The name of the municipality is the battle of Beaumont on 30 August 1870.

Culture and sights

The entire local ensemble reminds of a small fortified city. In an earlier setted by walls Oval of 400 x 500 meters, the streets were in a checkerboard -like, in the middle of the main square is the church and the building of the Mayor ( Mairie ).

Four houses at Place Principale are classified as a monument historique. It is in this area otherwise not encountered forms of houses with arcades and colonnades from the period between the 15th and 18th centuries.

The St. John the Baptist Church ( Église Saint -Jean -Baptiste ), originally from the 12th century, is equipped with a unique stone tower in the form of a grenade. The stepped altar, the tabernacle, and three paintings (baptism, burial and resurrection of Christ) are listed buildings.
