Bécancour, Quebec

Bécancour ( pronunciation: [ bekɑkuʁ ] ) is a city ( ville) and capital of the same name MRC Bécancour in the Canadian province of Québec.

It lies at the mouth of the river Bécancour in the St. Lawrence River opposite the city Trois- Rivières.

Becancour received city rights on 17 October 1965. Namesake is Pierre Robineau, second Baron of Portneuf and Lord of Becancour ( 1654-1724 ). The city has a seaport on the St. Lawrence River. In the district of Gentilly is the Gentilly nuclear power plant. The most famous personality of the city is the scientist Léon Abel Provancher ( ibid. * 1820, † 1892).

In the city of Bécancour is the Indian reservation Wôlinak, which is inhabited by around 170 members of the Waban - Aki Nation.
