History

The company was founded in Hamburg in 1882 by pharmacist Carl Paul Beiersdorf and taken over in 1890 by Oscar Troplowitz. The story of Beiersdorf begins with a patent of the pharmacist Paul C. Beiersdorf March 28, 1882. Therein developed by him, novel method for the manufacture of medical plasters is described. This date is considered the founding date of the company Beiersdorf.

Troplowitz launched in 1911 the first stable grease and moisturizer in the world under the name Nivea on the market after it had already sold a 1906 white soap.

On April 1, 2001, it was founded with its headquarters in Hamburg with BSN an independent subsidiary. As a joint venture between Beiersdorf (Hamburg) and Smith & Nephew ( London) BSN acted on the business field of wound care, orthopedics and Phlebology. BSN Medical in Germany in 2004 employed 350 and 3,400 employees worldwide. The turnover was 504 million euros and operating profit of 70 million euros. For spring 2006, BSN medical has been sold for 1.03 billion euros to the investment company Montagu Private Equity.

2003 With the establishment of Beiersdorf Shared Services GmbH (BSS ) the outsourcing of IT and accounting departments in another subsidiary. The BSS acts as an internal IT and accounting service provider and partner throughout the Beiersdorf Group and acts as an independent company. In the same year, ended a two-year takeover battle. The participation of the buyers and competitors Procter & Gamble could be prevented by a so-called Hamburger solution. Beiersdorf AG with its two divisions Consumer and tesa (since 2001 independent subgroup ) is the umbrella brand manufacturer of many branded products and cosmetics products, including Nivea, Labello, Elastoplast, Eucerin, Florena, 8x4, atrix or tesa.

In December 2010 it was announced that the company separates under a new brand strategy of the brand Juvena and Marlies Möller hair care products. Both brands will be continued by the Austrian Troll Cosmetics.

The head office is located in Hamburg, more German sites are Baden -Baden, Berlin, Emmerich am Rhein, Hanover, Offenburg and Waldheim. The location in Vienna will be expanded as the headquarters for Central and Eastern Europe.
