Beijing Spring

As Beijing Spring (北京之春) a brief period of political liberalization in the People's Republic of China is referred to 1977-1978. Also common is the term for a period of political relaxation of 1997 to 1998. The name is derived from the Prague Spring.

During the Beijing Spring of the population was given the opportunity to criticize the government. The main criticism was the Cultural Revolution. Criticism was published by the Wall of Democracy.

The term Beijing Spring was also used for a shorter period of political relaxation in the Communist Party of China in September 1997 until the middle of November 1998. The main causes were the death of Deng Xiaoping and the takeover of Hong Kong. During this phase, the China Democracy Party was founded and registered in some authorities. The dissident Wei Jingsheng was released and exiled China signed the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. At the same time found a state visit of U.S. President Bill Clinton and Marry Robison, Member of the UN Committee on Human Rights. The end of 1998 were the supporters of the second Beijing Spring, to a large extent dissidents and younger parts of the Communist Party of China.

Magazine

The Beijing Spring Magazine is a dissident journal that focuses on human rights. Parts of the magazine are also available on the internet. The aim of the magazine is to promote Chinese democracy movement in China and abroad. The founding of the magazine was supported by the American organization National Endowment for Democracy.
