Beilstein (Rhön)

The Beilstein is 864.6 m above sea level. NHN high, extinct volcano on the border between Bavaria and Hesse in the Rhön, a low mountain range in Bavaria, Hesse and Thuringia ( Germany ).

Geographical location

The Beilstein rises as part of the " Hohe Rhön " or the Dammer field massif within the training area wild spots, surrounded by the Natural Park and the Bavarian Rhön Rhön and the Rhön Biosphere Reserve. Its hilltop is located in the district of Fulda ( Eastern Hesse ) about 50 m north of the Bavarian- Hessian border; beyond this limit lies the district of Bad Kissingen. The nucleus of the city Gersfeld (Hessen ) is located approximately 5.1 km north- northeast of the mountain, that of the market game patches ( Bavaria ) about 3.4 km south- southeast. Almost 900 m east-northeast rises the Eierhauckberg.

Approximately 650 meters southwest of Beilstein knoll located on the southwestern tip of the two basalt stones Raven the remains of the ruined castle Rabenstein.

Watershed

About the Beilstein runs a part of the Rhine -Weser watershed. Flowing waters, which extend from the mountain in southern directions, flow over sense Franconian Saale and the Main into the Rhine, and the water of those streams which drain into the northern directions, flowing over Schmalnau ( in the upper and middle reaches Rommerser water called ) and Fulda in the Weser.

Geology

The Beilstein is of volcanic origin and consists of basalt. Several basalt formations emerge at its northern slope. On the bare summit an approximately 2 × 1 m is large hole of unknown origin in the basalt. Directly at the forest, the tangent to the mountain in the north, is a well-known rock formation, the Ludwig stone.

Fauna

The Beilstein is passed the exception of the highest range of its hilltop of deciduous forest. East of the crest is an elongated clearing.

Hiking in the restricted zone

Due to its location in a military zone of the Beilstein is not accessible to the public, but he can every summer at the " People's March " be hiked to the training area wild spots.
