BEL20

The BEL20 (Belgian 20 Index ) is a stock market index on the stock exchange NYSE Euro Next in Brussels. It includes 20 of the largest public companies in Belgium.

Calculation

The BEL20 is technically a price index. Overall, the index contains - as the name suggests - a maximum of 20 values ​​, which are listed on the international exchange NYSE Euro Next. The Index will be determined solely on the basis of share prices and adjusted only to income from subscription rights and special. The calculation is updated every second during the trading hours of 9:00 am bis 17:30 clock clock CET. The decisive criterion for inclusion is the market capitalization of the free float, the free float should be at least 15 percent and is also rounded in the calculation ever in 5 - percent increments. Thus, if the free float, for example, 25 to 30 percent, so the latter value is as a weighting factor of market capitalization in the calculation.

History

Historical Overview

The BEL20 was published on 18 March 1991 for the first time. Underlying are 1,000 points on 31 December 1990. On 15 January 1997 the Belgian side's benchmark index closing at 2005.37 points for the first time the 2,000 - point mark on 24 March 1998 with a closing level of 3010.36 points first the limit of 3,000 points. On 6 January 1999, the BEL20 closed at a record level of 3681.92 points. This was an increase since December 1990 to 268.2 percent.

After the bursting of the speculative bubble in the technology sector ( dotcom bubble ) of the stock index fell to a low of 1426.59 points to 12 March 2003. This was a decline from January 1999 to 61.3 percent. March 12, 2003 marks the end of the descent. From the spring of 2003, the BEL20 began to rise again. On 20 September 2006, the stock market barometer closed at 4021.99 points for the first time over the 4,000 -point mark. On 23 May 2007, the stock index ended trading at an all time high of 4756.82 points. Since the low in March 2003, the profit amounted to 233.4 percent.

In the course of the international financial crisis in the U.S. real estate crisis originated in the summer of 2007, the BEL20 began to fall again. On 11 July 2008, the index closed at 2959.35 points below the limit of 3,000 points and on 16 October 2008 with 1946.38 points below the 2,000 mark for points. A new low was achieved by the Index on March 6, 2009, when he finished trading with 1527.27 points. Since the all-time high of 23 May 2007, this represents a decrease of 67.9 percent. It is the biggest downfall in the history of BEL20.

The March 6, 2009 marked the turning point of the descent. From the spring of 2009, the share index was back on the way up. Until February 17, 2011, he rose by 81.4 percent to a closing level of 2770.81 points. The slowdown in the global economy and the intensification of the euro crisis led to a fall in the Belgian blue-chip index. On 24 November 2011, the BEL20 ended trading at 1916.26 points. The loss since its peak on 17 February 2011 is 30.9 percent.

The announcement of new bond purchase programs of the European Central Bank and the U.S. Federal Reserve in principle unlimited extent led to a recovery of prices in the stock market. The monetary stimulus played a greater role in price formation, as the global economic slowdown and the position of the company. On January 3, 2013, the index closed at 2516.85 points, up by 31.4 per cent as on 24 November 2011.
