Béla Balassa

Béla Balassa ( born April 6, 1928 in Budapest, † 10 May 1991) was a Hungarian- American economist. He was professor at Johns Hopkins University and formulated together with Paul A. Samuelson the Balassa -Samuelson effect.

Life

Balassa began in 1948 his studies in Economics at the Magyar Kereskedelmi Akadémia in Budapest, before joining the University of Budapest in 1951. The degree of Master (MA) in this subject, he finally achieved in 1958 at Yale University in New Haven, where he received doctoral degree Ph. D. was awarded the following year. Following a stint as an assistant professor from 1962 to 1967 at the same place he was appointed professor of economic policy. From 1970 to 1971 he was also editor of the Review of Economics and Statistics and chairman of the Association of Comparative Economics, which he was from 1979 to 1980 determined again. In the same year he also became a laureate of the Institut de France. His knowledge in the field of economics brought Balassa also since 1966 as a consultant to the World Bank.
