Béla Szőkefalvi-Nagy

Béla Szőkefalvi -Nagy (sometimes also written short Sz -Nagy, born July 29, 1913 in Kolozsvár, † December 21, 1998 in Szeged ) was a Hungarian mathematician who worked on harmonic analysis and functional analysis.

He was the son of the mathematician Gyula Szőkefalvi -Nagy (1887-1953), who also taught him. Sz -Nagy was from 1942 Professor of Analysis at the University of Szeged. In 1964 he was a visiting professor at Columbia University and in 1970 at Indiana University.

He dealt with Fourier analysis and theory of linear operators in Hilbert spaces. Frigyes Riesz With he wrote two textbooks on functional analysis.

In 1979 he was awarded the Lomonosov Gold Medal. He was publisher founded by Frigyes Riesz Acta Scientiarum Mathematicarum ( 1946-1981 ) and the Analysis Mathematica. The eponymous Béla Szőkefalvi -Nagy Medal is awarded annually since 2000 by the Bolyai Institute, University of Szeged for a major work of a mathematician in the journal Acta Scientiarum Mathematicarum. Szőkefalvi -Nagy was a foreign member of the Soviet Academy of Sciences and honorary doctorate from the Technical University of Dresden and the Finnish University of Turku.

In 1970 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Nice ( Sous- espaces invariants d'un operateur factorisations et de sa fonction characteristique ), 1958 in Edinburgh ( Spectral sets and normal dilations of operators ) and in Stockholm in 1962 (The "outer functions" and Their role in functional calculus ).

His doctoral counts Lajos Pukánszky.
