Belarmino is a Portuguese film in black and white from the year 1964.

Action

The semi- documentary film follows the former successful boxer Belarmino Fragoso (1931 - 1982) by Lisbon and provides insights into his everyday life. His brother was in London for him, and lost a battle. To erase this shame, Belarmino trained again for a rematch. But he lost the fight. This is the hanger of the film, and Belarmino tells his story in the film itself

Reception

The movie was 1964, after Os Verdes Anos (1963 ) by Paulo Rocha, the second groundbreaking film of the Cinema Novo. The statements Belarminos, partly received in the cafes of the slow outgoing Lisbon Bohème 1960s, alternate with shots Belarminos that show him in combat and training, as well as the coloring of images with which he earns his livelihood with difficulty. In particular, the moments where the camera accompanies him on walks through a trapped between modern awakening and a gender Estado Novo dictatorship city, provide the rhythm of the film. The aesthetics of the camera, the tense, quiet atmosphere, and the appropriate jazz soundtrack by Manuel Jorge Veloso and the band of the Hot Clube de Portugal were new in the Portuguese cinema. The socially critical view of the film is reflected in the unflattering pictures of the bustling city and conversations with Belarmino.
